Environmentally friendly granule covering agent: Non-toxic

A Field Note on the New Wave of Eco Insulating Fluxes

Steelmakers keep telling me the same story: smoke is out, stability is in. That’s why the Environmentally friendly granule covering agent coming out of Hebei has been quietly replacing dusty rice-husk mixes on shop floors. To be honest, I was skeptical at first—then I watched a ladle cover seal cleanly with no choking fumes. Surprisingly calm pour.

Environmentally friendly granule covering agent: Non-toxic

What’s changing in the market

Rice-husk coverings had their moment. But poor spreadability, crusting around the mouth, weak insulation, and—let’s be blunt—serious emissions have pushed mills to look for fluoride-free, low-dust, high-yield alternatives. Many customers say the newer granules reduce heat loss and re-oxidation while keeping tap-hole areas cleaner. It seems that a better flow profile matters more than we admitted.

Materials and process (shop-floor view)

The Environmentally friendly granule covering agent typically blends expanded perlite, fused silica, calcium aluminate, a touch of magnesia for alkalinity control, and plant-derived binders. Production goes: raw material qualification → wet granulation (spray) → low-temp drying (≈110–150°C) → screening (≈0.5–3 mm) → anti-dust surface treatment → bagging (moisture barrier). Each batch is checked for particle-size curve, bulk density, thermal conductivity, and LOI.

Technical specs (typical)

Parameter Value (≈, real-world use may vary)
Particle size0.5–3.0 mm (80% within band)
Bulk density0.55–0.75 g/cm³
Thermal conductivity @ 1200°C≈0.35–0.45 W/m·K (ASTM C177/C518)
LOI≤2.0% (ASTM E1131)
Moisture≤0.3% (as packed)
Fluoride contentNone added (F-free)
pH (slurry)7–9
Shelf life12 months (dry storage)

Where it’s used

  • Ladle and tundish covering for long/flat products
  • Induction furnace holding (clean steel focus)
  • Foundry iron and low-alloy steels; some aluminum holding

Testing and compliance

Particle size (ISO 13320), density (ASTM C29), thermal conductivity (ASTM C177/C518), refractoriness (ISO 528), and emission checks aligned to ISO 14001 systems. Worker dust exposure benchmarked vs local OELs; SDS available on request.

Vendor snapshot (what buyers compare)

Vendor Chemistry F-free Dust control Spreadability Certs
Xingtai Luxi (Hebei, China) Perlite–silica–calcium aluminate Yes Coated granules High (≈95% cover at 1–2 kg/m²) ISO 9001/14001 (supplier claim)
Rice-husk mix (generic) Carbonized biomass Yes High dust Low–medium Varies
Flux A (market) Silica–aluminate w/ binder Usually Medium Medium–high ISO 9001 (typical)

Case notes and feedback

Hebei long-products mill (winter shift): switching to the Environmentally friendly granule covering agent cut visible smoke nearly to zero and improved mouth coverage—operators reported fewer crust breakages. Internal log showed ≈18% lower temperature drop over 25 minutes and ≈22% less dross skim. I guess not every melt will see that, but it’s a solid directional win.

Customization and service

  • Grades tuned for Al-killed or Si-killed steels; tundish vs ladle residence time
  • Granule curve adjustments for splashy tap conditions
  • Packed in 10–25 kg moisture-barrier bags; palletized

Origin: No.3 Longyang South Road, Longgang Economic Development Zone, Xindu District, Xingtai, Hebei, China. Lead times are, frankly, reasonable unless peak season hits.

Why plants pick it

  • Cleaner bays (operators breathe easier)
  • Better thermal hold and slag freeze control
  • Consistent spread; less “islands” around the mouth
  • Compliance with modern EMS requirements

Testing notes: thermal per ASTM C177/C518; PSD per ISO 13320; terminology per ASTM C71; environmental management aligned to ISO 14001. Always verify against your melt practice.
