Nigeria's metallurgical industry is currently navigating a transition toward greater self-sufficiency. However, the reliance on imported metallurgical material remains high due to the gap between local raw material extraction and the technical requirements of modern electric arc furnaces (EAF).
The humid tropical climate of the region poses significant storage challenges for carbon-based additives. Moisture ingress often degrades the quality of carbon raiser, leading to inconsistent carbon levels in the melt and increasing the risk of slag inclusions in finished products.
Furthermore, while there is a growing demand for domestic infrastructure, the supply chain for specialized refractory materials like calcined bauxite is fragmented, forcing many local smelters to operate with outdated thermal insulation, which increases energy consumption per ton of alloy produced.
